It’s getting colder…

It’s the end of December; the end of 2011 and Buffalo remains with no measurable amount of snow on the ground. Snow shovels and snow blowers have remained silent. The lake remains warm which means…when the wind does begin to blow from the North across Lakes Erie and Ontario, we will have the lake effect snow for which Buffalo has a reputation. I am relatively certain at that time local residents will be lamenting the fact the snow has arrived; if that can be heard over the roar of the snow blower.

The temperatures here have remained in the high thirties and low forties which are also unseasonably warm for this time of year. I left the house this morning to juggle cars in the driveway and was met with the coldest temperatures we have had yet, 18-degrees. After moving the cars I returned to the house not to get warm but to retrieve my coffee. I spent about ten-minutes sitting outside enjoying the silence. I glanced to the East and saw a sliver of orange as the sun began to peek over the horizon. As I walked across the lawn my feet crunched the now frozen grass. The crunching sound brought me immediately back to past snowshoeing trips to the Adirondacks. As I was sipping my coffee I thought of my upcoming trip to the ‘Dacks and the email I received from Barry yesterday indicating he would be joining us. Namaste Barry. I look forward to seeing you again.
As this year comes to a close, I hope everyone is able to reflect on those things which bring happiness to your life as well as those things which have brought sadness and heartache. The latter has a tendency to be easier to hold on to, and for some of us to let go. Everyday I wake with a smile on my face and as I approach my meditation cushion I meditate on those things which bring me happiness and sadness as well as those things in my life for which I am grateful. It is my meditation practice and the gratitude which I experience which helps my smile to remain firmly in place despite what can often be a very difficult day.
Namaste.
